BRCA Ashkenazi Panel

Related Gene(s): BRCA1, BRCA2

Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) accounts for approximately 5% of all breast cancer and 10% of all ovarian cancer. The majority of cases of HBOC are associated with inherited pathogenic variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Individuals with HBOC are at increased risk for developing breast, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic, male breast, and possibly other cancers. Families with HBOC may have multiple affected individuals, early-onset breast cancer, and individuals with more than one primary cancer. The odds of HBOC are increased in the Ashkenazi Jewish population due to the fact that three specific pathogenic variants are present at an increased frequency: c.68_69delAG in BRCA1, c.5266dupC in BRCA1, and c.5946delT in BRCA2.
